Support Safer Campuses.
You’ve probably seen the headlines this summer about the hazing scandal at a prominent university. For years, members of the football team were subjected to acts of sexual assault, all in the name of team bonding. It can be shocking and enraging to hear the specifics of what exactly happened to the student athletes on that team.
We at Clery Center share your feelings of distress and anger, but we would like to offer you some hope. Twenty years ago, this would have been swept under the rug, and we never would have known about it. It’s not that hazing or other violence hasn’t been an issue on campuses all these years, it’s just that we as a society didn’t talk about it. Today, these brave students felt comfortable enough to step forward and shine a light on this inexcusable behavior. And their fortitude will have a positive impact on campus cultures for decades to come.
We know that the Clery Act has had an immense impact on the increase in transparency and accountability on college and university campuses. Transparent reporting systems are something that simply did not exist before the Clery Act. Campus safety and security as a profession did not exist to the magnitude it does now before the Clery Act. We at Clery Center are proud to be a part of this culture shift and eager to do more to foster positive change, and we need your help.
Our goal is to raise $75,000 this September in honor of National Campus Safety Awareness Month. Your support helps create campus communities that encourage reporting, take allegations seriously, and foster a culture that doesn’t tolerate violence of any kind. Your donation will help ensure that what happened to that football team doesn’t happen on another campus, because students and staff won’t remain quiet any longer. Can we count on you?
